Perception is a funny thing

I've always thought that I most resembled my mother.  From the time of my childhood to the present, people have remarked on our physical resemblance, and I certainly have inherited many things from her, for better or worse.  The worse includes such delightful characteristics as nearsightedness, a tendency to be overweight with its related medical issues, and finding my first gray hair when I was fifteen,  On the other hand, I also inherited some degree of musical talent, a love of reading, and an interest in solving puzzles and analyzing problems, which has served me well in life.

Today I realized some of what I have inherited from my dad.  On the way home from work, my dial-a-ride driver mentioned that he had picked up one of my neighbors earlier today. Somehow they ended up talking about my family and me.  She told my driver how much she respected my dad as a sort of "Father Knows Best" type of man--in the best sense--who was devoted to his family and his God. He was a strong man with a servant's heart, and he deeply and mutually loved his wife. I was in total agreement with these feelings, and miss him to this day.

Then she told my driver that I was a lot like my dad!  I had never thought that before, and it gave me a lot to think about.  When I got home, I told my mom, who surprised me with her agreement. She went on to say that she considered herself and my dad to be much alike in personality.

Inheritance is about more than genetics.  It is shown in the children that you raise. It is your personality, faith, beliefs and the knowledge you impart to your kids, which if you are truly blessed, you will see imparted to their kids.

It's  amazing what a little conversation can do to impact your perception of yourself and others.
